I’ve caught myself incorrectly discarding LEGO parts as well. I used to say, “if it doesn’t have a logo or part number, it’s not LEGO”, but that isn’t always true. Even my “look/feel like LEGO” sense isn’t always a sure fire way to tell. Good for you not throwing them away yet!
