Hello everyone, my name is Mike and I’ll be your skipper and swimming instructor. I spend most of my time in the Tropical Brighton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh. I’m looking at starting to do a big, probably multi-year, project recreating the Disneyland Jungle Cruise out of Lego. The plan is to make the attractions move like they do on the ride, which I plan to do with Technic pieces for the gearing and such. I’m hopeful that I can find support in finding the pieces I need and assistance in figuring out how to construct the mechanisms here.

Oh that ride is the best. From what I understand all the animals are real. They just bolt them down for our safety.

I don’t understand what’s going on here, but I approve of ambitious projects (so long as you have realistic goals and timelines and budgets and whatnot), and also of Weird Al. Carry on, play well, and of course people will be happy to get together and brainstorm / build stuff! Josh and I spent an entire evening (maybe two, actually) working on a GBC, only to largely discover several of the thousands of ways that wouldn’t work (obtuse attempt at Thomas Edison reference). Trying things out / building with friends is a great way to learn techniques, even if not all end up applying to your current build.
What’s going on here is that Mike and I are now best friends.

Ok, good, I thought maybe it was just me.
I mean, I get the gist; I’ve heard of Disney World (and the ride), but I’ve never partaken. This must be how the rest of the world feels when I quote Arrested Development, or The Princess Bride, or Cool Runnings, or The Mighty Ducks…

Well, @bengood921 knows of it / has seen it, but “not in a long time” and he doesn’t have the entire movie memorized, which is pretty much useless because he missed my reference the other day even when I told him it was there… :/
And Iāve been to a Cinco de Quatro party.
That is impressive; I can’t claim that, but I do know $13 still gets you a hell of a lot of mice…
I get this Jungle Cruise ride idea, but I think it will take a miracle. At one time I wanted to do the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride, (which I heard is now Finding Nemo.) There was a video of the entire ride posted on youtube.
If I were to do one of those typical Disney rides, I would start by laying out train tracks and creating a boat that has a train motor in the base.
My plan is to build the individual set pieces first and then put them all together possibly with a train set up to move the boat. I don’t harbor any illusions that this will be quick or easy, I expect that my now 2 year old daughter will be helping me finish it.

Yeah, this is definitely a marathon project, not a sprint. Could be the type to get you internet famous, though… we saw a Viking boat on train track setup at KidsFest 2012; I’m pretty sure there are photos somewhere in the LUG’s (and/or my personal) Flickr stream… maybe I can find them later.

Oh I’ve seen it many many times. The problem is, I don’t think I’ve seen it since the 80’s. And also, I’m not sure I’ve actually seen the entire movie in one sitting, even though I’ve seen every scene multiple times.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
That’s actually the second time that one’s been used on steelcitylug.com, Greg used it about a year ago, although I can’t remember where and why. Like yours, though, I’m pretty sure it was the entire post when he did it.

That should be easy to find on flickr. He and his wife also bring that one to every BrickFairVA and every BrickFete, as well as plenty of other conventions, so it’s frequently photographed. I also saw one like that years and years ago where they used train track hidden by landscaping to power the landspeeder on Tattooine.

Yea I think would be a good place to start! I would then adjust the train motor to create an oscillating motion (could be done by creating a piston-like mechanism, with one piston on either side on the bottom of the boat so when one’s up, the other’s down and vice versa), giving the boat more of a “on water” feel.

An egg-shaped cam would be good to use for this. I think Dan Efren’s steam punk machine, recently added to the Flickr group, uses a mechanism like this.
In my experience, when a boat is making way it tends to go up and down fore and aft, bow to stern. Boats rock more side to side when they are drifting (dead in the water) and the hull turns parallel to the waves.
The actual ride itself is on a track, do there isn’t a ton of rocking most of the time. I’ll pay attention when I’m there in September. I plan on actually starting construction in November, I have other projects I’m working on first.

That is quite cool. I saw someone had started doing a Haunted Mansion up the Ideas site. That’s what started me on this project.
Neat, thanks! It’s missing the Jungle Cruise though. That river is the Rivers of America with Tom Sawyer Island, at least that’s what it looks like to me.
