Lego Store Case Sale June 20, 2015

I was at the Beechwood, OH store earlier today. I asked if AFOL day discount could be used on K2 PAB Bulk cases. They said no. However there will be a separate sale on select PAB bulk cases on the following Sunday. The sale will be supposedly on June 20. Kevin Hinkle will supposedly be sending out an email to the Lug. From what they could tell me, the cases will be about $60 each. Don’t get your hopes up. The cases are not going to be great pieces, according to the store employee.

Most importantly, the sale will only last for TWO HOURS. Tentatively it will be 3-5pm. We shall wait for Kevin’s email to clarify. Also there might be a list in the email, detailing what cases will be on sale.

Hello and Good Morning LUG Ambassadors / Work Group Leaders,

I hope this message finds you each well! As we’ve witnessed both here on the LAN as well as in our daily engagement with the AFOL community, there’s been some discussion recently regarding a new direction / initiative for the Pick-A-Brick (PAB) wall at LEGO Brand Retail (LBR) Stores in North America. This new direction has involved the re-naming of the wall itself, now referred to as “Pick & Build”, as well as adding a feature in which specific small models can now be assembled using designated LEGO elements from the wall, referred to as “Pick a Model.”

One change in policy that has taken effect in conjunction with this new direction is the discontinuation of purchasing LEGO elements by the case. For those unfamiliar, some LBR stores offered the ability to purchase the cases of LEGO elements utilized to stock the back wall upon request. As we move in this new direction there is still an excess of PAB cases in certain locations. We’ve partnered with the LBR Operations & Merchandising teams to open the opportunity to offer a final sale on any excess PAB cases to the AFOL community. Requirements for participation in this opportunity will mimic what is in place for the quarterly LBR AFOL Discount Day. All PAB cases will be offered for either $80 USD / $100 CAD or $60 USD / $75 CAD depending on the specialty of the unique element. Each store has a different number of cases available and the selection will vary by location. Although we understand the importance of planning, lists of what is available per location will not be shared ahead of time. As always, participation in this opportunity is voluntary and you are in no way obligated to participate. This could be a great opportunity to schedule an impromptu meeting?

I knew it was coming, but it still sucks. I’ve purchased many a “K-2” case of basic brick as it was more cost effective and efficient than buying by the cup. Bricklink will now re-emerge (for me at least) as the prime (practical)* means of obtaining large quantity of a single element. I always prefer to buy directly from Lego whenever possible but this will make that much less likely for large quantities.

For example, a case of 2×4 brick contains approximately 688 bricks (I counted out two cases once, just to see). At S@H which sells 2×4 for .25, that equals $172. I never counted how many 2x4s fit in a cup, but let’s assume that they fit 50 (if properly stacked). That would be about 14 cups, which is $224. Even assuming you could fit a case of 2×4 into 10 cups, that is still $160, much more than the $100 per case (and I fondly remember $70 cases).

* Unless and until LUGBULK becomes more time efficient and able to purchase in much higher dollar amounts.

If anyone can get a case of 1×2 or 2×2 tan corner plates through this sale, please buy them and I will happily reimburse you.

I told you they would not let me buy them! and i can now effectively fit 169 2×4 bricks in the cup without breaking it or getting told i cant do that. So the math works out to about $65 per case of the 2×4 bricks if you use the method i went by.

Yep, you were in the vanguard on that. Unfortunately, one now needs to spend 30+ minutes filling 5 PAB cups when I used to be able to walk in, ask for a case, and walk out in less than 5 minutes. Not that I would ever spend only 5 minutes in a Lego Store. But I don’t like to waste time packing cups if I don’t have to. I guess the upside is that the time spent pays off in less $$$ spend ($65 per case versus $100 per case – that’s real money).

Have you done the math? How much does Timothy J. Freshly, Attorney At Law make per hour? Do the savings from packing cups outweigh the value of the time spent packing?
