I’m already thinking about if there’s a soft friends and family opening and if there’s going to be any special items just for Pittsburgh!

Unrelated Questions. 1.) Do you know when they will be posting the job listing for “Brick Specialist”? I may throw my hat in the ring for that. and 2.) I was told by the Store Manager at the Beachwood store that store managers can now request parts to put on their stores PAB wall… How soon in advance will you be taking requests???

Retail experience a plus!I was just at the Woodfield store, since Pete posted elsewhere recently about the Cleveland store having trans-light blue 1×1 round plates, I asked about them. He said they also had them but sold out very quickly, and when he went to order more, it was no longer an option. So apparently it’s not as simple as putting in requests to the manager (which is too bad, cause that sounds great).
I did ask, and apparently the manager can indeed pick from the options available in the distribution center. There’s a list sent out weekly. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get them.
I spoke yesterday with Alisa Harrington with Lego. She is in community relations and is very interested in having the LUG be part of the Grand Opening (and/or soft opening). She was not aware that Paula was a member of the LUG but was very pleased to hear that. We spoke about what the LUG members were interested in and I said we covered a wide variety, everything from GBC to train displays to space trains. Obviously, anything we do will have to be approved by Paula as the Manager but I think we can definitely be involved (I mean involved beyond spending obscene amounts of money).

Hmmm… so the question then is, will we get to see this list every week and make requests? (I’m going to go ahead and assume that if is an option for us, that it won’t happen until after the store has opened and is up and running.)
I’m also curious as to how extensive these lists are. For most of my years of going to Lego stores, if I went to one and I didn’t like what was on the wall, it was worth it to go to a nearby store to see if they had a better selection. A couple years ago though Lego came up with a policy of making all the walls the same across all stores. But Hinkle told me this summer that Lego had already abandoned that policy.

Yeah I suspected that’s how it would be. I’ve noticed the amount of overstock that stores has can vary from ‘so much that they set up a table in the middle of the store just for boxes of overstock’ to ‘nothing’.
In the past, I’ve simply asked if they have anything (after a store manager advised me that it’s a good idea to do so), but they always say ‘What are you looking for?’ and then it’s a question of how much of their time do I want to waste asking about piece after piece? So I’ve always asked for pieces I’ve seen on the wall before, and the only one I’ve had success with is the 3-stem plant piece (all those pine trees had to come from somewhere).
But the Woodfield Mall (Chicago) has started doing this thing where they keep a 32×32 baseplate handy, and it’s got one of every piece available – either on the wall or in the back – stuck to it. That way if a customer asks about overstock, they just bust out the plate and say ‘If it’s on here, we should have it. If it’s not, we don’t.’ It obviously makes things way easier for me, and I suspect they do it in part because it also makes their lives easier as well. I don’t know if it’s standard practice for Lego to have stores do that now or if the Woodfield people came up with it themselves, but I’d definitely recommend trying it at some point down the road.
